Oral Contraceptive Prescribing in Community Practice: Exploring New Options

When:
May 27, 2025 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Where:
Virtual – Digital Delivery, Vancouver BC

As the landscape of contraceptive care evolves, pharmacists are increasingly playing a pivotal role in helping patients navigate new and existing oral contraceptive options. With recent changes in BC PharmaCare coverage and the introduction of new prescription options, pharmacy professionals need to stay current and confident in their approach to counselling.

Join us for a timely and practical session with Dr. Jane Xia as we explore the latest developments in oral contraceptive prescribing. Through real-world insights and patient-focused strategies, Dr. Xia will walk participants through how to assess patient needs, evaluate hormonal and progestin-only contraceptives, and recommend suitable options based on individual circumstances and provincial coverage.

Whether you're just starting to prescribe or looking to enhance your approach to contraceptive care, this session is designed to equip pharmacists, technicians, and students with the tools and knowledge to support patients confidently and effectively in the community setting.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the webinar, pharmacists will be able to:

  • Compare Different Oral Contraceptive Options: Identify and distinguish between various hormonal contraceptives, including their benefits and drawbacks.
  • Assess Patient Needs for Oral Contraceptive Options: Determine when a patient needs new contraceptive advice and how to engage with them effectively.
  • Evaluate Oral Progestin-Only Contraceptives: Explain the advantages of progestin-only contraceptives, including fewer side effects and a longer missed-pill window.
  • Recognize the latest prescription contraceptives added to BC PharmaCare: Assess when to recommend them based on patient needs.
