B.C. community pharmacists deliver more than 1 million vaccines in less than a month

Vancouver (Oct. 31, 2023) — British Columbia’s community pharmacists have hit record numbers and delivered almost 85 per cent of the province’s COVID and influenza vaccinations, having administered more than 1 million doses since launching the annual respiratory illness campaign on Oct. 10.

“We have seen a great demand from the public who are wanting to protect themselves from both COVID-19 and flu this year,” says Chris Chiew, President of the BC Pharmacy Association. “Pharmacists are pleased to continue to be the major provider of vaccines to the public. We are one of the most accessible health care providers in the province.”

Nearly 1,300 pharmacies across British Columbia are participating in the program, with a majority of pharmacies offering both COVID-19 and influenza vaccinations. Pharmacies and public health clinics together have delivered a total of more than 1.3 million COVID-19 and influenza vaccinations across the province.

“Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our health care system during respiratory illness season,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “Delivering record numbers of COVID-19 and influenza vaccinations, pharmacists are integral to keeping our communities healthy, and our government is grateful for their efficiency and dedication. I want to thank the hard-working community pharmacists throughout the province, and the BC Pharmacy Association for its support towards our annual campaign launch.”

Individuals aged six months and older are encouraged to get their COVID-19 and influenza vaccines. Pharmacists are accepting influenza appointments for anyone 4 years or older and for COVID-19 appointments for those 12 and older.  People will be able to receive both influenza and COVID-19 vaccines at the same time if they wish, depending on availability. If it has been more than six months since an individual’s last COVID-19 vaccination, they are eligible to receive one.

If you are already registered on the Get Vaccinated System, use the booking link and your unique booking code to book an appointment online. If you have not registered, visit the province’s Get Vaccinated web site to register. You can also call the call centre at 1-833-838-2323.
