On Oct. 26, 2021, Dr. Bonnie Henry announced that a booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine will be available for all British Columbians who have received their two doses of the vaccine.

Community pharmacy locations across the province will play a major role in delivering the booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine, which will be Pfizer and Moderna. The province expects 85 per cent of community pharmacies to be involved by January 2022 and the booster campaign to last until May 2022. Some pharmacies may start to be involved even earlier than January 2022.

The next group of British Columbians eligible for their booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine will be seniors older than 70 years of age and Indigenous Peoples over the age of 12 who have received their first and second doses. Individuals will become eligible for their booster shot once six months have passed since their second dose. Clinically extremely vulnerable or immunocompromised individuals have already been invited for their third doses, since they need an extra dose for their series, whereas most British Columbians received a two-dose series of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The BC Pharmacy Association has been working with more than 50 pharmacies in the past few months to help with the provincial appointment booking system, called ImmsBC, in anticipation of pharmacy’s increased role in the COVID-19 booster campaign. All pharmacies can now start the process of getting involved by registering their interest in participating in the COVID-19 booster campaign.

In order to participate in the program your pharmacy must use the Province’s ImmsBC booking system, which allows British Columbians to be notified when its their turn for a booster shot and allows patients to select a pharmacy location offering the COVID-19 vaccine. For ImmsBC, every staff member in the pharmacy will need to have their own account to access ImmsBC. Staff members will not be permitted to share account. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is required to access the system.
