As the next influenza season looms near, an opportunity to further protect your patients from pneumococcal disease presents itself. This webinar will review the latest evidence surrounding the significant burden of disease due to community-acquired pneumonia as well as the patient population that is most at risk. The additive benefit of a conjugate pneumococcal vaccine (ie. Prevnar-13) in addition to the polysaccharide vaccine (ie. Pneumovax-23) will be discussed as well as the current NACI guidelines for who stands to most benefit from receiving both these vaccines.

Learning Objectives:
- Summarize the burden of pneumococcal disease in our communities as well as the patient populations most at risk.
- Discuss the potential additive efficacy, population impact, and mechanisms of action for pneumococcal conjugate (Prevnar-13) and polysaccharide (Pneumovax-23) vaccines.
- Critique the Canadian National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) guidelines and BC eligibility criteria for publically-funded pneumococcal polysaccharide and conjugate vaccines.
About the Speaker: David Massaro
David Massaro is the pharmacy manager at Valley Evergreen Pharmacy in Langley as well as a clinical pharmacist with CBI Health Centre in Abbotsford. Massaro specializes in chronic pain management and rehabilitation services.
After graduating from UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences as a community practice residency graduate, Massaro has gained over ten years of experience in several multidisciplinary ambulatory care clinics working within the specialities of primary care, geriatrics, chronic pain, cardiology, infectious disease management and endocrinology.
Massaro brings a breadth of knowledge to pharmacy and hopes to shape minds in pharmacy. Massaro was a former UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences lecturer and clinical instructor and the co-developer of the current scope-expanding BCPhA injection training prograj. Recently he has teaching and consulting engagements with the UBC Faculty of Medicine, Canadian Pharmacists Association, Canadian Pharmacy Practice Program and Continuing Pharmacy Professional Development.
