Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) are amongst many options available to patients seeking long-term family planning. In British Columbia, pharmacists have been at the forefront of delivering comprehensive contraceptive services, consistently performed more than 1,000 minor ailment and contraception services per day. More than 95,300 patients were assessed between June 1 and September 5, 2023 and more than 1,300 pharmacies (around 85% of community pharmacies) are providing Minor Ailment and Contraception Services (MACS).
Join Dr. Renee Hall, a Clinical Associate Professor at UBC, who has been working in the area of family planning in Vancouver for over 20 years. Dr. Hall will identify when a LARC method is an appropriate contraception option during patient assessment, describe how the method may align with patient needs, demonstrate delivery of effective counselling of a LARC, and share clinical experiences and barriers in providing a LARC and how to implement in the pharmacy workflow.
Learning Objectives
After attending this session, pharmacists will be better able to:
- Recognize when a LARC method is an appropriate contraception option during the patient assessment.
- Describe how a LARC method may align with patient needs.
- Demonstrate delivery of effective counselling of a LARC.
- Discuss clinical experiences and barriers in providing a LARC and how to implement in the pharmacy workflow.
About the Speaker: Dr Renee Hall
Dr. Renee Hall is a Clinical Associate Professor at UBC who has been working in the area of family planning in Vancouver for over 20 years. She is the medical director at Kelowna General Hospital’s Women’s Services Clinic and Co-director of Willow Reproductive Health Centre. She also works at the CARE program at BC Women’s Hospital, Everywomans Health Center, and Elizabeth Bagshaw Clinic and is the director of the UBC CPD IUD and contraceptive implant training program.

This program is non-accredited. Total learning hours is estimated at 1.0 hours. Participants will receive a letter of participation after completion of the survey at the end of the webinar.
